Counselling is generally considered to be shorter term work compared to psychotherapy and is usually suited for those who have experienced sudden, unexpected life events. These may be things such as bereavement, relationship difficulties, redundancy, career changes, money worries, serious illnesses or other significant changes. Counselling targets the thinking part of the mind, helping you to become more aware of your thoughts, beliefs and actions that may be preventing you from moving forward. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) is a widely used method in short term counselling work which usually takes place over 6 to 12 therapy sessions
As well as exploring your issues, your first few sessions will also aim to build a strong therapeutic relationship based on trust, understanding and unconditional acceptance where you can feel safe enough to talk freely about your issues. As the sessions progress, we will begin to identify those unhealthy and irrational patterns of thinking which may have been holding you back in the past. Between each session, we will often set a small amount of homework which is intended to further challenge any negative or unhealthy beliefs in your everyday life.
It is important to remember that as therapists, we will never give you advice or tell you what you should or shouldn't be doing. Our job is to support you in that space, challenge unhealthy ideas and contaminated thinking patterns and to help you discover new ways to cope with the feelings and emotions which come up around your issues. Our part in your treatment is to help you gain the understanding and awareness you need to allow you to take the path which are right for you.
"I went to Gareth after going through a devastating break up. He helped me work through all the inevitable feelings of loss and grief, but, more importantly, also helped me understand just why I was so upset and how it linked back to some significant childhood traumas. I now feel equipped to not only look to the future with more optimism, but also understand the red flags of any future relationships and how to act accordingly - in other words prevent repeating the mistakes I have repeatedly made in the past. Talking everything through in such depth and analysing what has happened to me has helped me immeasurably, and it is down to the insight and guidance I have received from Gareth" (MM - Counselling Ealing)
